Told the kids

The girls know now.  Well, I should clarify that.  Big Sister knows.  Little Sister refused to come downstairs when requested.  It’s okay if she finds out by accident though since it won’t mean anything to her.

Big sister took it well.  She asked a few questions.  We kept things light and amused ourselves by asking her to pronounce “sclerosis”, which she couldn’t say, of course.  We said just to say “MS”.  We told her some basics.  We started out telling her that there’s now a name for what’s going on with my eye, that there’s a reason for my optic neuritis.  We explained that the messages from my brain don’t always get where they are supposed to go and that they get a bit fuzzy on the way sometimes.  We explained that’s why my vision is cloudy in the right eye.  We let her know that people get MS in different ways and not to be scared if she hears about people with MS needing wheelchairs or canes.  That’s not where I’m at and we’re hopeful the medicine will help.  I think it went very well.  No tears! Yeah!  It’s nice to not have to walk on eggshells anymore.  It is stressful to keep secrets.

We also let her know that I was going to be taking steroids next week and that if Mommy is moody, I apologize in advance and to check with Daddy if I say something bizarre.

  1. Good job!!! So much easier to not have to keep secrets. Good luck with the steroids. It might be a wild ride. Stay patient with yourself, avoid salt, eat potassium-rich food, sleep when you can, use Zantac, avoid making any large decisions. You’ll do fine.

  2. Thanks for the tips! I think I’ll pick up some bananas and apricots when I run out to pick up the sleeping pills she called in for me. I keep Zantac 150 around in bulk, so that’s one thing I don’t have to get. She said to avoid concentrated sweets. Does this mean I can’t have chocolate?!? I already warned work that I may need to take off, but I hope not to. I’m getting major decision things out of the way over the weekend just in case. I’ll try to remember to be patient with myself. That’s pretty hard to do.

  3. Sounds like all went well. Can’t wait to see you this weekend!
